Finishing school from Ohrigstad, Burgersfort, Dullstroom or a farm in between

Thaba Chweu and the districts around it are not built for convenient schooling. If you farm outside Ohrigstad, or you are on a mine contract near Steelpoort, or you live at Roossenekal or out towards Dullstroom, the nearest school with the right subjects can be an hour away in each direction.

A two-hour round trip every day is roughly a term of a child's life every year. Families do it anyway, because what else is there.

There is something else.

What we actually do for families outside town

Nova is on Church Street in Lydenburg, and plenty of our students come in and work here full-time. But the programmes themselves are online, which means the building is optional.

For students who cannot attend the centre, Zoom lessons are available wherever you are, at a time that suits you. That is not a lesser version of the service. The teaching on every one of our programmes is video-based to begin with — the tutoring is the live part, and live works perfectly well over a connection.

We have worked with students in and around:

• Ohrigstad and up the R36, where the drive to a decent school with the right subject combination is the whole problem.
• Burgersfort, Steelpoort and the mining belt, where families move for a contract, then move again, and a child pays for it in half-finished school years.
• Roossenekal and the farms west of town, where distance and the state of the road do the deciding.
• Dullstroom, Machadodorp and along the R540, small places with limited options past Grade 9.
• Sabie and Graskop over the Long Tom, which is a beautiful drive exactly twice and then it is just a drive.
• Mashishing and Lydenburg itself, for families who want the centre in person, several days a week.

Three ways to use us

Not everybody needs the same thing, and it is worth knowing that before you phone.

Full-time at the centre

The student works through their programme on site, with staff on hand for the moment a concept will not land. We provide the internet connection for full-time students. Students should bring their own laptop.

This suits a student who needs the structure of leaving the house, and it suits a family close enough to town to make it work.

Full-time from home, on Zoom

The student works through the same programme wherever they are. Lessons are video-based and can be watched as many times as needed, and the live tutoring happens over Zoom at a time arranged around the student — including early, late, or around a job.

This is the one most out-of-town families end up on. It removes the drive entirely.

Exam preparation only

This one surprises people, so we will spell it out. Many students who have worked through a programme entirely on their own come to us purely to be prepared for the finals.

If your child is enrolled with a distance provider and doing fine on the material but you are worried about the exam itself, that is a completely legitimate reason to call. You do not have to move them, re-enrol them, or change anything. You are welcome to use us for the last stretch only.

What does not work over Zoom, honestly

We would rather be straight about the limits than have you find them in April.

A student who needs somebody in the room. If the actual problem is that nothing gets done unless an adult is physically present, Zoom will not fix that, and neither will a login. Those students do far better at the centre, at least at first. Some families start full-time in Lydenburg and shift to remote once the habit is built. That is a good plan and we are happy to run it that way.

Practical subject components. Some creative and practical subjects need specific arrangements, and those arrangements are easier close to town. Ask before you count on a subject.

Very young children, with nobody home. A Grade 3 learner working online needs an adult nearby. Not teaching, but present.

Enrolment does not wait for January

This matters more for out-of-town families than for anyone else, because a mid-year move or a mid-year crisis is what usually forces the question in the first place.

Enrolment is open all year on all three programmes. A student can start in March or in September. On the GED each of the four exams is written the moment the student is ready rather than in a fixed November, and on the self-paced programmes a good month simply counts for what it is worth.

If a contract has moved your family to Steelpoort in the middle of a school year, your child does not have to lose that year.

The nearest school is a fact of geography. It has not been a fact of education for about a decade now.
